I LED sono il metodo più popolare ed economico per la retroilluminazione della tastiera. I LED incorporati vengono spesso utilizzati per illuminare piccole aree di un interruttore di membrana o finestre di piccoli indicatori. Possono essere incorporati sul circuito flessibile di un interruttore di membrana, rendendoli un'opzione pratica quando si desidera illuminare una singola icona o una piccola porzione di una sovrapposizione grafica.
I LED sono montati sulla superficie, usando epossidici conduttivi d'argento e sono più adatti per il testo e la grafica selettivamente retroilluminanti, piuttosto che la retroilluminazione del sovrapposizione grafica o del display. I LED sono, in genere, un'alternativa economica ad altre opzioni di retroilluminazione.
I LED sono efficienti e irradiano poco calore. La retroilluminazione a LED può essere configurata utilizzando un singolo colore o più colori, a seconda del risultato desiderato. Questa tecnologia di retroilluminazione viene utilizzata in grafica in poliestere o tastie di gomma.
Ma poiché i LED sono vicini in prossimità della sovrapposizione grafica, usando LED incorporati come retroilluminazione per aree più grandi o per illuminare un'intera sovrapposizione grafica non è così conveniente come altre opzioni di retroilluminazione, nella maggior parte dei casi.
